“In 2019, project KivuWatt began extracting the methane gas from Lake Kivu, which lies between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Scientists suggest that exploiting Kivu’s methane potential could prevent a disaster because, with methane concentrations rising, it would eventually experience a deadly phenomenon known as an overturn, suffocating millions of people with gas. However, the Government sees economic potential beyond the deadly nature of the Lake. This mosaic reminds us that the generation of energy and jobs could have a higher cost for these developing countries.”
