Learn to “draw” water by reproducing it and its effects. Begin with simple drops of water, graduate to water held captive, then on to water in the wild: still water, ripples and reflections, and water in a hurry (rapids, eddies and falling water). Colored pencil makes it easy and detail-controllable. Observe, identify, and then master the skills to reproduce the characteristics of each kind of water.
