Desert Impressions

Printmakers of The Drawing Studio

Desert Impressions

December 12, 2026 - February 14, 2027

Reception:  Friday, December 11, 4-6 pm

Ironwood Gallery

This exhibition brings together members of The Drawing Studio’s printmaking community in an exhibition shaped around the ecology, habitats, and places of the Sonoran Desert region. The works on view examine a broad range of subjects, including native plants and wildlife, regional landscapes, waterways, historic structures, and other features of the Southwest. While each artist approaches these subjects from an individual perspective, together they offer a diverse survey of contemporary printmaking informed by the environments and communities of the region.

The exhibition includes a range of printmaking methods drawn from several major traditions of the medium. Relief processes, such as linocut and woodcut, print from raised surfaces, while intaglio techniques such as etching, drypoint, and mezzotint transfer ink from incised or textured plates. Other works may employ flat-surface methods such as lithography or monotype, light-based processes such as cyanotype and photopolymer printing, or experimental approaches including carborundum and mixed-media printmaking. Across these methods, artists make deliberate choices about line, tone,

texture, color, and the physical transfer of ink to paper, demonstrating the technical range and expressive possibilities of the printed image.

Founded in Tucson in 1992 by artist Andy Rush and fellow artists, The Drawing Studio is a nonprofit visual arts organization dedicated to accessible arts education, exhibitions, and community engagement. Through classes, workshops, studio programs, and exhibitions, The Drawing Studio has supported generations of artists throughout Southern Arizona and continues to serve as an important center for drawing, printmaking, and lifelong creative practice.
