Lucrezia Bieler
2026 Art Institute Artist in Residence
Residency May 1-31, 2026
Lucrezia Bieler is a Swiss-born artist based in Florida whose practice bridges scientific illustration, conservation, and the technical rigor of cut-paper art. Trained as a scientific illustrator at the Hochschule der Künste in Zurich, where she graduated with honors, Bieler began her career as Chief Scientific Illustrator at the Museum for Anthropology in Zurich before relocating to the United States in 1994. Her work has since been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in museum collections.
Bieler’s imagery often centers on endangered animals and ecosystems, rendered through meticulously hand-cut paper compositions that emphasize balance, interdependence, and fragility. Many works are structured as mandala-like forms, using symmetry and repetition to reflect the underlying order of natural systems. Working primarily in black and white, Bieler’s practice emphasizes precision and restraint through a meticulous, process-driven approach.
Her practice draws on scientific methodologies and sustained observation, grounded in a disciplined engagement with material and technique. This commitment extends beyond the finished work and is reflected in her public documentation of the making process, which emphasizes careful looking, craft knowledge, and ecological awareness.
Bieler is affiliated with the Society of Animal Artists, Artists for Conservation, the Guild of American Papercutters, the International Association of Paper Artists, and American Women Artists.
