Mastering water in watercolor relies on wet-on-wet technique for soft base layers, and wet-on-dry for sharp, defining reflections and ripples. The secret lies in painting the values of the sky rather than just the water, keeping a consistent perspective, and resisting the urge to overwork your brushstrokes. Create distance by making ripples and waves lighter in value and smaller in size the further they are from your foreground. Learn to capture reflections, moving water, and waves!
