Sheri Ashton

Instructor

A third-generation Arizona native, I’ve lived in the Valley of the Sun most of my life. Traditionally educated as an interior designer, I cultivated organic, contemporary living spaces and commercial venues for over 20 years. While raising my two children, I  took a rewarding hiatus from design and opened a book-making art store. There, I taught customers how to record and express themselves in an alternative and interesting way. I’ve developed several art masterpiece units for Arizona elementary schools, where I realized creating art was a passion I needed to explore and make space for. In 2022, I graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a BFA in painting. I am currently vice-president of the Five15Arts@Chartreuse artist collective and working on a new solo show for 2026.

My work explores the complexity of human emotion and memory through abstraction. I’m drawn to the physicality of paint—its ability to obscure, reveal, and hold time. I primarily work in oil and cold wax, using layers to capture moments of emotional shift or personal reflection. Each painting evolves intuitively, beginning with a specific feeling or experience that I’m investigating. As the work develops, I often notice that it begins to invite broader interpretations. What starts as a personal moment transforms into something more open, allowing viewers to connect with the work through their own emotional lens.
